This celluloid fan from the first half of the 20th century is a distinctive example of early modern European fashion accessories. The structure is built on intricately pierced celluloid sticks and guards, their creamy ivory hue and subtle gloss imitating the luxury of ivory or tortoiseshell, while the geometric and floral cut-outs create a lace-like, airy effect. The leaf is made of translucent canvas, hand-painted in an impressionistic floral composition—pastel pinks and violets with accents of green, yellow, and touches of blue, forming a harmonious, delicate color palette. The construction follows the traditional form, with a small metal rivet joining the sticks at the base, and the proportions—wide semicircular spread (41 cm) and height (22 cm)—are elegantly balanced. The fan is preserved in very good condition, with only minor signs of age and a slight weakness at one fold, requiring gentle conservation.This fan seems to whisper stories from bygone salons, where celluloid brought a breath of modernity and the artistry of hand-painted canvas spoke to a pursuit of refined elegance and individuality.
