ABOUT PRODUCTID 35834
This unique movable fish figurine from the early 20th century is a rare example of artisanal craftsmanship rooted in Jewish ceremonial tradition. The body is crafted from natural mother-of-pearl, its overlapping, scale-like segments forming an articulated, flexible structure. The mouth opens to reveal a brass interior, designed to hold aromatic herbs or dried spices, harking back to the ritual of Havdalah. The surface shimmers with a cool, pearlescent white, accented by flashes of green, pink, lavender, and gold. The fins and tail, also made from mother-of-pearl, display natural patterns and subtle color gradations. Along the back, small brass pins and joints connect the segments, introducing a discreet metallic accent that highlights the object’s folk-inspired, eclectic character. Proportions are naturalistic, while the geometric segmentation pays homage to traditional folk motifs. The overall finish is smooth and lustrous, with minor irregularities and inclusions typical of hand-worked shell. Condition is very good, with a fully functional mechanism, gentle signs of age, and a noble patina on the brass elements. This object tells the story of early 20th-century Central Europe, where tradition and daily life intertwined through symbolic artifacts.
