ABOUT PRODUCTID 38222
The Villeroy & Boch Dresden fish serving set from 1874 is a prime example of late 19th-century European ceramic craftsmanship. Comprising four plates (23.5 x 20.5 cm) and a sauce boat with an underplate (19.5 x 13.5 x 13 cm), each piece is crafted from glazed ceramic and marked on the underside with the Dresden manufacturer's stamp in use until 1909. The dominant palette features a warm, creamy beige with subtle yellow tones, complemented by a cool, muted turquoise-green gradient along the scalloped rims. Every plate is hand-painted with detailed freshwater fish scenes, surrounded by naturalistic depictions of aquatic plants, shells, and insects, enhanced with delicate gilded highlights. The glossy, smooth surface bears gentle irregularities characteristic of hand-formed ceramics, while the construction is defined by softly scalloped edges and a robust, integrated handle on the sauce boat. The set is preserved in very good condition, with no visible damage or signs of restoration. This service set tells the story of the late Victorian era, when nature was a key source of inspiration for artists and craftsmen. The hand-painted fish and aquatic plants evoke the tranquil rivers of Germany, while the gilded accents subtly highlight the refinement and attention to detail. Having survived more than a century in the setting of a Poznań townhouse restaurant, these pieces carry the memory of gatherings around the table and the passage of eras—a testament to the endurance of craftsmanship and the rituals of daily life. The set can be used for elegant dinners or displayed as a collector's highlight in a dining room or living area.
