The Coat Tree freestanding coat rack, designed by Sidse Werner for Fritz Hansen, embodies late modernism in a sculptural, biomorphic form. Its structure centers around a chromed steel column from which gracefully curved arms radiate outward, each tipped with matte black plastic spheres that echo at the base. The cool, mirrored chrome lends the piece a striking presence, while visible screw joints emphasize its industrial lineage. The proportions are tall and slender, with the glossy metal surface contrasting against the matte, slightly textured finish of the plastic details. This example, produced in Denmark in 2001, retains the original manufacturer’s label. The overall condition is excellent—chromed elements have been meticulously cleaned and polished, and the plastic ends are intact, with no visible signs of wear or damage. The Coat Tree tells the story of 1970s modern Denmark, where design transformed function into sculptural gesture. Its form, inspired by the branching of trees, seems to rise organically from the floor—a silent sculpture awaiting the garments and accessories of daily life. The chrome finish catches and reflects light, while the black spheres at each arm’s end allude to a playful approach to proportion and geometry characteristic of Scandinavian modernism. This is a coat rack that resists anonymity, subtly asserting the strength of Sidse Werner’s original vision. In an interior, the Coat Tree can be paired with minimalist sofas, leather seating, or simple light wood consoles to highlight its graphic silhouette. It will work equally well in a mid-century modern living room or an eclectic collector’s space, where sculptural details define the atmosphere. Combining it with black-and-white artwork or an unfinished floor can draw out the contrast of materials and underscore the organic rhythm of the design.
