ABOUT PRODUCTID 16835
This ceramic Foo Dog (Chinese Lion) figurine was crafted in China during the 1970s. Fashioned from glazed ceramic, the piece features a cohesive, deeply cobalt blue color with a cool turquoise undertone. The entire surface is finished with a uniform, glossy glaze that accentuates the carefully rendered relief details—most notably along the mane, tail, and chest, where stylized curls and flowing, symmetrical lines evoke classical Chinese decorative motifs. The dog is depicted seated upright on a square pedestal, itself embellished with geometric relief patterns. With compact dimensions (height 15.5 cm, length 6.6 cm, width 4 cm), this figure occupies both a decorative and a collectible role. There are no visible signs of damage or restoration; the glaze is fully intact and sculptural details remain sharp—the condition is very good.
The figurine conjures the deep-rooted symbolism of Chinese culture: from its origins in the Han dynasty to its later prominence during the Tang period, guardian lions protected homes and temples from malevolent spirits. The monolithic yet subtly dynamic form and consistent coloration reflect a 20th-century interpretation of classical motifs—preserving cultural reverence, but allowing for a sense of decorative freedom. The play of light across the glazed surface suggests movement and tranquility in equal measure, as if the piece invites not only admiration but also engagement with its iconographic meaning.
This figurine may be displayed as a striking accent on a sideboard,
