The U 459 highboard, designed by Jiří Jiroutek for Interier Praha in the 1960s, is an exemplary manifestation of Czechoslovak modernism. Its construction comprises two distinct sections: an upper glass-fronted display case with two sliding glass doors and a wooden shelf, and a lower portion with a left-hand cabinet behind smooth doors and four wide drawers on the right, each with integrated horizontal handles flush with the fronts. The whole is crafted from light brown, honey-toned oak veneer, with a pronounced natural grain visible across all surfaces. Splayed, tapered solid wood legs lend the piece a sense of lightness, while the satin-matte finish subtly reflects light and accentuates the wood's texture. The glazed display invites the presentation of collections, while the closed compartments and drawers provide practical storage. The highboard is preserved in very good condition after professional restoration, showing only minimal traces of use typical for original pieces from the period.This piece speaks in the voice of the 1960s, an era when functionality and clarity of form defined modern interiors in Central Europe.
