This hand-carved and hand-painted wooden horse originates from 19th-century Germany and epitomizes the folk decorative craftsmanship of its era. Crafted from a single piece of wood, the figure displays the robust, solid body and stylized proportions typical of late 19th-century fairground or carousel horses. Harness, bridle, mane, and saddle are carved together with the torso and then meticulously painted in vivid shades—red, blue, green, gold, and black—against an aged, creamy off-white ground, now heavily patinated. The painted finish exhibits extensive wear, chipping, and areas of exposed wood, especially on the head and legs, testifying to its age and authenticity. Characteristic geometric and folk motifs adorn the saddle cloth and chest, evoking the lively, colorful tradition of European carnival art. The horse is missing one ear and a section of its tail; the surface also reveals scratches and paint losses, highlighting its genuine, timeworn character.
