ABOUT PRODUCTID 1728
Ikebana, model no. 494, is an example of 1960s Polish utilitarian ceramics designed by Wit Płażewski for the Włocławek Faience Factory. The body is crafted from fine, hand-painted faience, finished with a glossy glaze. The dominant colour is a soft, creamy off-white, forming the background and interior of the vessel, while the exterior is adorned with vertical, hand-painted brushstrokes in shades of blue, ranging from light to medium tones, creating a dynamic, almost textile-like pattern. The form is elongated and oval, with subtly upturned, asymmetrical ends that evoke the organic lines typical of mid-century modern design. The vessel is low and wide, emphasizing a horizontal silhouette. The original factory mark is present on the base. The condition is very good – there are no cracks or chips, the hand-painted decoration remains vivid, and there are no signs of heavy wear or restoration. This vessel tells the story of Polish modernism in the 1960s, when designers sought a dialogue between function and ornament. The Włocławek ikebana, conceived by Płażewski, carries echoes of a postwar belief in a new aesthetic: its flowing, organic lines radiate calm, while the hand-painted decoration animates the surface like a rhythmic score. The blue brushstrokes evoke a summer morning by the Vistula – a gentle yet distinct voice of an era when craft and applied art blended seamlessly. This ikebana vessel finds its place in interiors inspired by modernism or eclectic collector’s spaces, where vintage
