ABOUT PRODUCTID 42456
The 'Ogródek 538' ikebana vase, designed by Jan Sowiński in 1963 and produced by the Włocławek Faience Factory, exemplifies the modernist spirit of Polish design in the 1960s. Crafted from glazed faience in a cool, pastel blue with a lustrous, even surface, the vase features a distinctive flattened, disc-like body with a central cylindrical neck—an elegant nod to Japanese ikebana traditions. The top is adorned with two concentric bands in a lighter, almost white-blue shade, marked by subtly raised, organic textures. Regularly spaced holes punctuate these bands, serving both decorative and functional purposes, allowing for precise arrangement of flower stems. The base bears the impressed mark 'WŁOCŁAWEK | 538.' Measuring 11.5 cm in height and 26 cm in diameter, the vase is preserved in ideal condition—its glaze uniform and glossy, with no visible chips, cracks, or signs of restoration. This vase tells the story of 1960s Polish modernism—a period when applied arts sought a dialogue between function and artistry. Its cool blue hue and geometric clarity evoke the postwar avant-garde, drawing inspiration from global movements and Japanese traditions. The precisely placed openings, like tiny windows, invite light to dance across the glazed surface, each detail a testament to craftsmanship and the era’s bold, forward-thinking approach. The vase seems to whisper of a time when Polish ceramics embraced innovation while remaining close to everyday life. The vase may be used for traditional ikebana arrangements or as a striking centrepiece on a dining table or in a curated ceramic collection. It would complement a mid-century modern setting as well as an eclectic interior—pair it with a pale tablecloth, single stems or linearly
