ABOUT PRODUCTID 32295
This faience platter in the Imari style, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, embodies the European fascination with East Asian decorative arts. Crafted from glazed earthenware, it features a warm, slightly creamy white base highlighted by hand-colored transfer prints of large, stylized floral motifs in deep cobalt blue and vivid orange-red. Lighter orange accents and subtle touches of brown enrich the composition, while the flowers are symmetrically arranged around the rim, each set within a geometric, dark blue base. The gently scalloped edge is outlined with a fine red line, lending a sense of delicacy and movement. The surface is glossy, covered with a fine crackle glaze (crazing) and visible discoloration in the central area, all indicative of age and authenticity. No repairs are visible, though minor scratches and a natural patina show the platter's vintage character. The diameter is 23 cm. It is preserved in very good vintage condition, displaying natural signs of use and time.
The form of this platter tells the story of a period when Europe embraced the exoticism of Japanese Imari ware – a time when such motifs were translated into Western tableware, from London to Vienna. Every detail, from the geometric flower bases to the interplay of cobalt and orange-red, reveals both the handwork involved and the desire to bring Eastern ornament into the European home. The fine crackle and subtle central discoloration evoke decades gone by, as if the platter recalls quiet tea afternoons and conversation in old-world parlors.
