This large ceramic jug from Atelier Cerenne Vallauris represents French studio pottery from the 1950s, distinctly mid-century modern in spirit. The form is elongated and oval, gently tapering towards the base. A proportionally thick, round handle is harmoniously integrated into the upper section. The entire vessel is covered in a cool lemon-yellow glaze with a glossy, mirror-like finish, extending seamlessly over the handle. The front is adorned with striking, hand-painted black motifs: a stylized figure beneath a curved tree with star-shaped leaves, applied in expressive, dynamic brushstrokes. The decoration references Africanist and primitivist art influences, echoing the postwar artistic explorations typical of Vallauris. All elements are ceramic; there are no metallic parts. The piece is signed. The jug is in good condition, with a chip located on the interior rim of the spout while the outer glaze remains uniform and unblemished. This object echoes the atmosphere of 1950s Vallauris—a period when workshops like Cerenne embraced bold colorfields and motifs inspired by distant cultures.
