ABOUT PRODUCTID 1963
This Rococo-style wine jug, crafted by the renowned German manufacturer WMF at the end of the 19th century, exemplifies the refined metalwork of its era. Formed from pewter and finished with a silver-plated layer, the jug displays a cool, matte silver-gray tone accentuated by a naturally aged patina. It stands on four elegantly scrolled feet, while the body is adorned with high-relief ornamentation: dynamic rocaille motifs and intricate grapevine patterns with leaves and grape clusters. The domed, hinged lid is topped with a sculpted finial; the robust, gracefully curved handle flows into additional Rococo decorations, while the wide, smoothly shaped spout integrates seamlessly with the overall silhouette. The front features a laurel wreath reserved for a monogram or coat of arms. Every detail is sharply defined, and the WMF maker’s mark on the underside authenticates its origin. The jug is preserved in very good condition—only natural traces of age and patina are visible, with no significant damage or repairs. The jug speaks in the voice of the late 19th century, when historicist trends revisited past styles and Rococo motifs were revived with renewed exuberance. The sculpted rocaille swirls like musical phrases, while the vines and grape clusters evoke images of feasts and social gatherings, suggesting the jug once held pride of place at the center of a convivial table. Its palpable weight and subtle patina remind one of its history, inviting the imagination to wander through evenings illuminated by candlelight reflecting off the reliefs in metal. This jug is best showcased as a decorative accent on a console, sideboard, or within a glass-fronted display cabinet. It can be paired with other silvery or pewter accessories, Empire-style porcelain, or classic glass
