ABOUT PRODUCTID 4634
This Japanese lacquer box from the Meiji period (early 20th century) exemplifies refined craftsmanship of its era. Constructed from wood with a rectangular form and gently domed lid, the box is finished in deep, glossy black lacquer. The lid features hand-painted, asymmetrically arranged motifs—garments, stylized coins, and delicate botanical details—in warm shades of gold, red, and ochre. These painted accents are complemented by bronze inlays, particularly in the coin motifs, alluding to the symbolism of prosperity and abundance. The box is secured with a metal lock and retains its original key, adorned with a decorative tassel. Dimensions: height 8 cm, length 20 cm, width 17 cm. The condition is good: natural signs of use, minor scuffs and wear on the edges, and a gentle lacquer patina are visible, with no major structural damage. Within this box resonates the spirit of the Meiji era—a time when Japan elegantly blended tradition with the dawn of modernity. The smooth black lacquer and irregular gold accents recall the quiet opulence of historic households, where every object carried its own symbolic story. The bronze coins seem to whisper of fortune, while the asymmetrical painted composition reveals an affinity for unexpected balance, characteristic of late 19th- and early 20th-century Japanese aesthetics. This box could serve as a repository for jewelry or cherished keepsakes in a bedroom, fitting seamlessly atop a period vanity or among contemporary accessories. It pairs well with ceramics in white or deep hues, a single blooming cherry branch, or a simple matte fabric. The piece would bring a distinguished element to oriental, minimalist, or eclectic collector’s interiors—spaces where authenticity and subtle detail are truly valued.
