This Japanese lacquer box from the Meiji period, crafted in the early 20th century for the French company Vendroux, exemplifies the refined fusion of Japanese craftsmanship and export aesthetics. The structure is made of wood, fully coated in deep, mirror-like black lacquer that catches and reflects light, accentuating the box’s subtle proportions. The lid features a hand-painted motif in warm gold, ochre, and muted red tones, depicting a naturalistic scene of larks among blooming flowers and foliage; the front is adorned with a bronze appliqué in a floral form. Rounded corners and gently beveled edges give the box an elegant, sophisticated silhouette. The interior bears an inscription, “ciasteczka Vendroux” from the city of Galais.
