ABOUT PRODUCTID 37750
This elongated rectangular lacquer box from the Meiji period, crafted in Japan at the turn of the 20th century, is a testament to masterful lacquerware craftsmanship. Constructed from wood and coated in multiple layers of deep black, highly polished lacquer, the box radiates a lustrous mirror-like finish. The lid features an asymmetrical, hand-painted composition of exotic foliage, delicate blossoms, and a bird rendered in muted browns, white, and purple, complemented by iridescent mother-of-pearl inlays. These decorative elements, rooted in Japanese naturalism and minimalism, reflect the late 19th-century fascination with the Orient and the Japonisme movement in Europe. The metal lock escutcheon is original (key missing), and the proportions—31 cm in length, 11 cm in width, 8.5 cm in height—emphasize the elongated, refined character of the piece. The box is preserved in very good condition, showing only minor traces of use and a noble patina acquired over time. This object expresses the voice of the Meiji era, carrying with it a philosophy of harmony between nature and art. The gleaming black lacquer evokes an atmosphere of quiet contemplation, while the shimmering mother-of-pearl details subtly catch the light, as if bringing a fragment of a Japanese garden into the interior. Each brushstroke of the hand-painted decoration bears the mark of artistic discipline and calm reflection, characteristic of a Japan opening itself to the world and inspiring Western imagination. The box is best placed in a collector’s setting or a living room with oriental accents, where it can be combined with minimalist light wood furniture, ceramics in neutral tones, or nature-inspired prints. It pairs well with classic interiors where detail and texture are celebrated. Positioned on a console, shelf, or within a display cabinet, it serves as a subtle highlight, showcasing appreciation for craftsmanship and Far Eastern aesthetics.
