This elongated rectangular lacquer box from the Meiji period, crafted in Japan at the turn of the 20th century, is a testament to masterful lacquerware craftsmanship. Constructed from wood and coated in multiple layers of deep black, highly polished lacquer, the box radiates a lustrous mirror-like finish. The lid features an asymmetrical, hand-painted composition of exotic foliage, delicate blossoms, and a bird rendered in muted browns, white, and purple, complemented by iridescent mother-of-pearl inlays. These decorative elements, rooted in Japanese naturalism and minimalism, reflect the late 19th-century fascination with the Orient and the Japonisme movement in Europe. The metal lock escutcheon is original (key missing), and the proportions—31 cm in length, 11 cm in width, 8.5 cm in height—emphasize the elongated, refined character of the piece.
