ABOUT PRODUCTID 36469
This Japanese lacquer box from the early 20th century (Meiji era) is a precisely crafted rectangular object made from lightweight wood, finished with multiple layers of deep, reddish-brown lacquer. The glossy, mirror-like surface is adorned with maki-e decoration, combining gold, black, green, and red accents in an asymmetrical composition: the lid features a bird perched on a bamboo branch, surrounded by delicate leaves. Both flat and slightly raised (takamaki-e) patterns are used, creating a sense of depth and a subtle play of light. The form has softly rounded edges and corners, while the lock has an oval, metal escutcheon (silver or nickel-plated) set flush into the front panel. The construction reveals no visible nails or screws, with joints that are tight and invisible. The box is preserved in very good condition—its lacquered surface is free of chips, cracks, or restoration marks, and the original hinges and lock are intact and functional. This box echoes the spirit of the Meiji era—a period when Japan opened to the world and captivated Europe with its exquisite craftsmanship. The lacquered finish catches the light with a soft, theatrical depth, while the gentle scene of bird and bamboo seems to speak of harmony and the fleeting beauty of nature. Every decorative detail testifies not only to the artisan's mastery but also to the Japonisme spirit that permeated
