ABOUT PRODUCTID 42542
This decorative music box, crafted in the shape of a mandolin and dating from the early 20th century, is a subtle example of Swiss decorative arts from that era. The body is made of a tortoiseshell-like composite in a deep, warm brown with a polished, glossy texture that highlights the quality of execution. Its surface is adorned with intricate inlays of various metals – white, gold, and copper – forming floral and bird motifs, crowned by a geometric pattern along the neck. The proportions faithfully reflect a classic mandolin: a rounded body and slender neck create a harmonious form, while a brass winding knob provides both functionality and a discreet metallic accent. Inside, the piece houses a Swiss music box mechanism that plays a melody when wound. The condition is very good, with no visible damage or signs of restoration; the decorative elements and mechanism are complete and authentic. This object embodies the poetic spirit of an era when applied arts blended with precise craftsmanship. The mandolin music box seems to tell of a time when music and the artistry of everyday objects formed an inseparable duet. The lustrous tortoiseshell and intricate inlays evoke luxurious salons and tranquil evenings of a bygone age, where the gentle sound of a music box provided the soundtrack to daily rituals. Even as a small object, it captures the atmosphere and detail-driven spirit of the early 20th century. The mandolin-shaped music box could be displayed on a low walnut console or in a collector’s cabinet, where its decorative details can be fully appreciated. It would pair well with other period objects – porcelain, art glass, or small-format graphics – to create a cohesive, evocative arrangement. This piece would also serve as an accent on a mantel in
