ABOUT PRODUCTID 20102
This early 20th-century mechanical pencil, crafted in Austria around 1900–1920, is a refined example of Art Nouveau-era craftsmanship. Its body is formed from 835 silver, intricately guilloché-engraved with a fluid, undulating pattern that reflects the organic lines characteristic of the Secession style. Both ends are capped in glossy black Bakelite: the rear end is rounded and smooth, while the front tapers to a conical point, providing an ergonomic grip and a striking visual contrast to the matte silver body. A slender, polished silver ring marks the transition between materials. The lead extension mechanism operates via twisting the body, and the pencil measures 8 cm in length with a diameter of approximately 6 mm. The surface bears a signature—silver hallmark and goldsmith's initials HJ. The condition is very good, with no visible signs of wear, dents, or restoration, and the mechanism remains functional. This discreet object echoes an era when even everyday writing instruments were conceived with meticulous attention to detail. The guilloché silver evokes the ambiance of elegant Art Nouveau desks, where every line carried intent and the ritual of writing became a personal experience. The metallic coolness of the silver and the deep black of the Bakelite create a dialogue between materials, embodying the dawn of modernity—the pencil seems to whisper of silent offices and travelers’ sketchbooks, where the simple act of drawing a line expressed individuality and craftsmanship.Such a pencil could serve as a subtle highlight in a collection of period writing accessories or be displayed on a
