ABOUT PRODUCTID 14024
This vase, designed by Josef Hospodka for the Chribská glassworks in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s, provides a compelling example of mid-century modern artistry with an experimental and sculptural approach to form and color. The organic, freeform silhouette displays undulating lines and distinctively upward-turned, irregular edges, reminiscent of natural biomorphic shapes. Crafted from thick, hand-polished glass with a high-gloss, almost mirror-like finish, the vase features a striking gradient of color: from deep cranberry red through a saturated violet at the center, fading to a near-transparent base. These layered hues create a sense of fluid motion, accentuating the spontaneity and freedom of hand-shaped glass. The substantial weight and stability are evident, while the absence of visible seams highlights its monolithic construction. Condition: very good – no chips, cracks, or significant signs of wear, and the surface is exceptionally smooth, showing no restoration or repair. The vase expresses the spirit of 1960s Czechoslovak modernism, an era when glass became a medium for artistic freedom and bold experimentation. Its dynamic contours and seamless color transitions capture the pulse of the times—like a moment of light suspended within solid form, mingling the tranquility and creative vigor of an open, forward-thinking age. Each reflected shade plays as a vignette from decades past, with the designer’s bold gesture preserved and awaiting new meaning in a contemporary setting. This piece is well-suited for placement atop a console or sideboard in a living room, where natural or targeted lighting will accentuate its deep colors and surface effects. It may be combined with other mid-century glassware or ceramic accents and pairs richly
