ABOUT PRODUCTID 19255
This early 20th-century mocha cup and saucer from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire is crafted from fine, glazed white porcelain. A saturated, cool cobalt blue forms the main visual impression, contrasted by lavish gilded accents: the angular handle, the entire interior of the cup, and the edge of the saucer are all finished in mirror-like gold. Hand-applied lacework motifs, featuring geometric and floral medallions inspired by late 19th-century craft, add intricacy to both pieces. The cup's form is compact and cylindrical with seamless vertical sides, and the handle is integrated smoothly into the body—evidence of precise craftsmanship. The finish is glossy and smooth throughout, entirely free of cracks or flaws. Condition is very good: the gilding and detailing remain almost untouched, with no visible traces of use or restoration. This cup carries the echo of the Belle Époque—an era when even daily rituals became small ceremonies. The deep cobalt surface recalls the cool ambiance of evening salons, while the shimmering gold interior reflects light like a theatre box at the turn of the century. The delicate garlands evoke a longing to unite function and artistry, speaking in the soft, harmonious language of Art Nouveau. It embodies nostalgia for a time when expert hands elevated everyday objects into instruments of delight. This type of porcelain is at home on a solid Biedermeier table or a classic dark wood sideboard in a collector’s living room, serving both decorative and practical purposes. It pairs well with a Venetian glass carafe, a substantial Art Nouveau candlestick, or a tray displaying antique silver spoons. In an intimate, artistic interior, it could be combined with a linen napkin and a single vase from a historic glassworks, highlighting the contrast of colors and lines so distinctive of the fin de siècle.
