ABOUT PRODUCTID 19286
The 'Płaski' mocha cup and saucer, designed by Bogdan Wendorf for Ćmielów in the 1930s, is an example of Polish applied modernism from the interwar period. Crafted from highly saturated yellow porcelain, the exterior is decorated with an expressive organic craquelure glaze – a network of irregular beige-brown lines reminiscent of marble fissures. Glossy glazing enhances the depth of color, reflecting light and emphasizing the intricate surface. The form of the cup is compact, flat and geometric, while golden bands along the rim, foot, handle, and the edge of the saucer highlight its modernist pedigree. The distinctly angular, openwork handle is finished with a contrasting white stripe, and the immaculate white interior provides visual balance against the richly ornamented exterior. Proportions are tight and symmetrical, reflecting the precise design logic of the 1930s and making the set a material and formal statement of modernistic, everyday luxury. The cup and saucer are in very good condition – both the porcelain and gilding remain intact, with no visible signs of wear, loss, or repair. The surfaces retain their original gloss, and all details are preserved. This cup resonates with the spirit of prewar Warsaw: the concentrated joy of vibrant yellow offsets the subtle craquelure, evoking the optimism of the 1930s
