ABOUT PRODUCTID 1930
This chromolithograph from 1878, created in Berlin, depicts the ceiling elevation of the Poenitenzieri Monastery in Rome. The composition is built on a recurring pattern of crosses and octagons, each filled with stylized rosettes and botanical motifs, rendered in a neoclassical spirit with Renaissance undertones. The dominant hue is a deep, muted navy blue, complemented by accents of gold, beige, and subtle terracotta. The print, on paper measuring 32 × 25 cm, is presented in a professionally assembled frame: a cream passe-partout and a slender, satin-finish gold frame (47 × 39 cm) under clear glass, emphasizing its historic character. Authentic inscriptions below the image—date, issue number, and artist’s name—attest to its provenance. The artwork is in excellent condition, with no visible damage, discoloration, or restoration marks. This piece resonates with the voice of late 19th-century Berlin, an era captivated by antiquity and the revival of architectural ideals. The precise rhythm of its ornamentation speaks in the language of architectural treatises—as if the monastery ceiling itself narrates a story of harmony, order, and classical inspiration, captured by the draughtsman’s skilled hand. The soft patina of the colors and matte surface evoke the atmosphere of historical ateliers, where every detail was both a lesson and an artistic statement. The lithograph may be displayed above a classic writing desk or in a living room, where the gold frame subtly echoes other decorative details—such as antique mirrors or a collection of porcelain. It will suit neoclassical interiors as well as eclectic collector’s spaces, especially when paired with black-and-white engravings, a vintage map, or minimalist contemporary ceramics. For the best effect, it is worth placing it against a neutral wall to bring out the depth of the navy and the intricacy of its ornamentation.
