The optical vase, designed by Jan Drost for HSG Ząbkowice in the 1970s, emerges from the heyday of Polish glass design. Made from pressed glass in a cool bluish, transparent hue, the vase features an elongated oval-cylindrical body adorned with striking geometric ribbing. This optical surface texture lends depth and movement—symmetrical vertical and horizontal undulations that catch and diffuse the light. The surface is glossy, and the glass, showing small air bubbles within its mass, evidences the period manufacturing technique. Measuring 17 cm in height with a lip of 13.5 x 8.5 cm, the vase’s proportions are suited for displaying singular stems or standing as a sculptural element in its own right. It is preserved in very good vintage condition, with no signs of damage or repair.This piece recounts an era when the artistry of pressed glass was elevated beyond its utilitarian roots, a transformation encouraged by Jan Drost’s fascination with optics, industrial technique, and rhythmical structure.
