ABOUT PRODUCTID 13160
This rectangular lacquer tray from early 20th-century Japan is crafted from thin wood, layered with multiple coats of lacquer for a subtle, semi-matte sheen with natural depth. Its primary color is a deep, rust-brown tone, forming the backdrop for hand-painted decoration: golden and cream motifs depict stylized landscapes with cranes, a winding tree, bamboo, floral branches, and Mount Fuji in the distance. The border is adorned with a speckled gold and black pattern, now partially worn, revealing areas of base wood and patina acquired through the years. Integrated cutout handles on the short sides provide a seamless grip. The design draws on Meiji and Taisho period aesthetics, blending traditional subject matter and elongated proportions with the artistry of Japanese lacquerware. Condition: visible signs of age, including abrasions, small chips, and a characteristic patina reflecting decades of thoughtful use.The tray’s form evokes the quiet mornings of early 20th-century Japan—muted sunlight filtered through shōji screens, and an appreciation for the beauty of daily rituals. Each painted crane and undulating branch appears as a captured moment, carrying the transience and grace so central to Japanese art. The dialogue between the shimmering gold landscape and the warm, dark background reveals the close alliance of functional craft and refined ornament, speaking in the silent language of its time.Placed atop a low sideboard, the tray’s painterly composition and rich contrasts are beautifully brought to life by daylight. It pairs effortlessly with ceramic tea bowls, porcelain cups, or a restrained ikebana arrangement. In an interior with wood finishes or quiet colors, the tray’s ornamental design could be complemented by simple, contemporary accessories—
