This French inkwell from 1860–1870 exemplifies the late 19th-century fusion of European craftsmanship and Orientalist influences. The body is cast in robust bronze, finished with a layer of silver that has developed an elegant patina and golden undertones, especially in the recesses and on the ears. The Indian elephant’s head is adorned with intricate, symmetrical floral and geometric engravings across the forehead, as well as a decorative hinged covering that conceals an ink well. The ears are deeply textured, gently curved, and serve as practical dishes for pen nibs, calling cards, or other small items. The tusks, made from polished natural buffalo bone, create a striking visual contrast and highlight the authenticity and artisanal quality of the piece. Measuring 5.6 cm in height, 18.6 cm in length, and 17.5 cm in width, the inkwell remains in very good condition for its age, showing only minor signs of use and a noble patina. No damage or restoration is visible; all original components, including the hinged lid and functional compartments, are intact. The sculptural form echoes an era when the exoticism of the East captivated European imagination.
