This pair of cast iron sculptures depicting recumbent spaniel-type dogs was crafted in the second half of the 19th century, most likely in Germany. The sculptures are notable for their academic realism: each figure exhibits finely modeled anatomy, expressive faces, and meticulously detailed fur, embodying the naturalistic aesthetic favored in late 19th-century animalier art. The dogs rest on substantial, rectangular bases made of light beige marble with discreet, natural veining, added in a later period. Their surfaces show a dark brown patina with greenish highlights—a mark of age and authentic iron oxidation. The matte finish of the cast iron fur contrasts with subtler, satin reflections on raised areas, while the joinery with the stone bases is invisible, ensuring a seamless presentation.
