This set of two neoclassical vases, crafted by hand in the 1980s in the Luxembourg village of Roodt-Sur-Syre by Nico Maria Klein, exemplifies the artisanal revival of antique ornament in late twentieth-century Europe. Each vase features a solid wooden core, meticulously layered with polychrome paintwork. The design begins with a flared foot, grounded by a marble-black ring and a pronounced red band, which anchors the form. The body is adorned with raised diamond lattices and stylized acanthus leaf motifs, further enriched by three-dimensional, hand-painted blue flowers with yellow centers. The ram’s horn handles, highlighted by intricate golden scrollwork, lend a sense of ceremonial symmetry, drawing on motifs from antiquity. The dominant palette centers on antique gold with a warm satin finish, accentuated by deep green, crimson, and cobalt. Visible brushwork and the subtle presence of wood grain beneath the paint testify to the object’s craftsmanship. Both vases remain in excellent condition: no damage or restoration is visible, the original vibrant polychrome finish has been preserved with only a mild patina appropriate to their age.
