This pair of hand-carved and polychrome wooden horse figures from India, dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, exemplifies the finesse of traditional Indian decorative craftsmanship. Made entirely of wood, the sculptures display a carefully balanced construction and a distinct, vibrant palette: a warm, matte terracotta red covers the legs, underbelly, and part of the head, while the upper body and neck appear in a light, subtly greenish ivory tone. Each horse is adorned with a richly decorated, rectangular saddle blanket in vivid olive green, featuring intricate floral and geometric designs in white, red, and yellow. The harnesses and bridles are painted in green, gold, and red, with stylized, geometric folk motifs. The texture is slightly rough, with visible brushstrokes and a tactile sense of the wood grain. Structural joints at the legs and neck are apparent, and the hooves are painted black, completing the form. Both figures show minor chips, especially around the ears, but remain in good overall condition, consistent with their age and use.
