ABOUT PRODUCTID 15641
This set of two Balinese wall masks from the late 19th century demonstrates the craftsmanship of local carving and hand-painted tradition in folk art. Each mask is carved from solid wood, providing durability and authenticity, while the shallow, precise sculpting emphasizes stylized facial lines. The composition centers on symmetry and elongated, oval contours, accentuated by striking color contrasts: matte black and muted white meet in bold, graphic patterns across the surface. Strong red lips draw attention at the center, while areas around the eyes and chin, marked in black, introduce an element of drama. The matte finish is complemented by gentle traces of patina, minor nicks at the edges, and localized wear to the paint, all reflecting the passage of time and lending the set a tangible sense of vintage authenticity. There are no structural defects—overall, the masks remain in very good condition, with any wear limited to age-consistent surface details. The presence of these masks evokes the spirit of Balinese ceremony and festivity: monumental yet vividly expressive faces seem to invite a sense of ritual and intrigue into the interior. The play of black and white acts as a visual dialogue—calm, geometric lines nod to modernism or Art Deco influence, while the objects retain the primal boldness of folk tradition. Subtle paint cracks and the tactile, flat carving reveal the hand of the local artisan—each mask suggests a time when decoration and symbolism held sway over the domestic setting
