ABOUT PRODUCTID 15966
This set of two mid-20th-century African wall sculptures presents stylized busts of a man and woman, carved by hand from solid teak wood—a material especially appreciated in decorative arts of the era. The larger, 37 cm-high female bust features finely braided hair rendered in high relief and a large, circular earring, referencing traditional African motifs. The male bust is distinguished by geometric, stylized hair texture, a sharply defined jawline, and a necklace marked by a single incised line. The natural, matte honey-brown finish of the teak brings out the tight grain and subtle sheen, with the play of light revealing the soft polish of the surfaces. Despite the passing decades, the pieces are smoothly finished, showing no cracks or repairs—preserved in excellent, near-original condition with only minimal traces of use. Both works carry the voice of the mid-century—an era when African craftsmanship became a point of dialogue between local identity and the modern search for form. The tranquil, stylized facial features recount a sense of harmony and the nurturing of individuality within a collective tradition. Attention to detail, such as the intricate hair textures and the abstracted lines, documents the ethos of the time: tradition transposed for contemporary tastes and transformed into a universal statement of everyday dignity and beauty. This pair of reliefs would be well placed on a feature wall in a living room, study, or entryway, especially when paired with natural textiles and warm wood tones. They could be combined with woven decor, a simple solid oak console, or a wicker arm
