This Austrian paperweight from the early 1900s–1920s embodies the vanitas motif: a skull sculpted in matte ceramic, in a light grey-beige tone, rendered with realistic anatomical details and a subtly porous, bone-like texture. A meticulously crafted serpent winds through the eye sockets and around the skull’s dome, its scaled surface providing tactile interest. The piece is anchored by a polished rectangular base of dark brown to near-black marble, accentuated by bold streaks of white and gold veining and a high-gloss finish that starkly contrasts the ceramic’s subdued sheen. The beveled geometric edges of the marble introduce an architectural note, mediating between the organic flow above and the precise, rectilinear support below.
