ABOUT PRODUCTID 12214
This UFO-type pendant lamp, designed by Josef Hurka for the Czech manufacturer Napako in the 1930s, embodies the functionalism and geometric rigor of the Bauhaus era. The body is crafted from highly reflective, mirror-polished chrome-plated metal, capturing the surrounding interior and emphasizing the minimalist nature of the design. A central, frosted glass diffuser in an off-white tone gently disperses the light, providing a soft counterpoint to the cool sheen of the metal. Chrome suspension elements and four bakelite bulb sockets complete the construction. The shallow, perfectly rounded dome and seamless lines are characteristic of early 20th-century modernist lighting. The lamp is preserved in its original good condition, with minor signs of age and subtle patina on the chrome, but without significant damage or restoration. The form of this lamp speaks in the voice of Czech modernism: disciplined lines, metallic coolness, and measured gloss. It echoes the 1930s, a time when light was meant to order the space rather than dominate it. Like an industrial sculpture, the lamp tells a story of an era where function and purity of form were paramount—lighting designed to be present but never intrusive, with light softly diffused through frosted glass, reminiscent of a misty morning along the Vltava. Such a lamp would work well suspended above a dining table or centrally in a living room, where its geometric silhouette can take center stage. It could be paired with Bauhaus-era furniture, simple wooden or glass forms to underscore its modernist pedigree. In more eclectic interiors, it may be combined with natural textiles or ceramics to soften the chrome's coolness. It also suits industrial or minimalist spaces, where it will serve as a strong yet understated lighting accent.
