ABOUT PRODUCTID 16359
This double photo frame, crafted using trench art techniques in the early 20th-century German Empire, is composed of brass rifle shells and bullets. The structure is defined by the elongated cylindrical shapes of spent ammunition forming the side edges, base, and central divider. Each section is topped with a three-dimensional imperial crown, featuring outstretched wings, stars, and medallions with stylized photographic portraits. A geometric openwork brass trim runs along the bottom edge of each compartment, enhancing the graphic and martial character. The metal surfaces are predominantly matte, interspersed with areas of soft satin sheen and patches of patina; visible oxidation and scratches further emphasize the passage of time. The back of the frame exposes raw wood and heavily flaked paint, highlighting its handcrafted and military origins. Exposed construction details—soldered and riveted joints—are left deliberately visible, underscoring authenticity and the object’s unique character. The frame communicates a layered narrative, embodying the transformation of military material into a reservoir for personal memory. Its formal rigidity and ornate imperial insignia evoke both the gravity of its origins and the intimate act of commemoration, as if the brass preserves traces of everyday life at the front while shifting into a personal relic. The composition of geometric motifs and reliefs encapsulates an era’s sentiment, presenting tangible evidence of history’s enduring imprint on private stories. This frame will function best as a standalone display on an oak or walnut console, particularly among late 19th- and early 20th-century militaria, porcelain, or antique clocks. It can be combined with dark textiles or graphite-toned accents to emphasize its warm, aged gold color. Directional lighting will draw out the details of the crowns and openwork motifs, and within eclectic or collector’s interiors, it will highlight the character of a study or classical library.
