ABOUT PRODUCTID 17157
This ceramic pitcher, designed by Raymond Chevalier for Boch Freres Keramis in Belgium, is a clear example of Art Deco aesthetics – its form rooted in a spherical lower body, a sharply geometric neck, and a decorative handle composed of two intersecting semicircles finished in reflective gold. The surface is covered in a glossy yellow glaze with a subtle gradient: the lower portion evokes a lemon freshness, while the upper shade is deeper and warmer. Distinct gold gilding is applied to the handle, spout, and bands around the neck, accentuating the rhythm of the form and contrasting with the semi-matte ceramic body. The surface displays a fine crackle in places, evidence of the object’s age. The pitcher measures 23 cm tall and is signed; minor chips at the base and localized rubs to the gilding are present but it remains in good overall condition, typical of authentic 1930s pieces. The pitcher captures the dynamism of Belgian Art Deco – at a time when geometry and momentum shaped European design, Chevalier expressed modernity through volumes and interplay of light. The handles, like twin brushstrokes, and the gold that catches morning light, the glaze gently shifting from one yellow hue to another: this object offers a narrative of the era’s optimism and joy in new forms. The fine craquelure and subtle marks of time are woven into its story, each layer of glaze and glint of gold reflecting the sophisticated, decorative modernism of the interwar period. Stand the pitcher alone on a low walnut sideboard or glass shelf to focus attention on its yellow
