ABOUT PRODUCTID 10679
This fat lava planter from the 1970s is an example of West German mid-century modern ceramics. Crafted from clay, it features a classic cylindrical shape with a slightly flared rim (height 9 cm, diameter 14.3 cm). The base is finished in a warm, medium brown glaze with a glossy surface, overlaid by the hallmark thick 'fat lava' glaze in creamy white and beige. The glaze drips organically, creating a raised, irregular texture and a striking contrast of tones. The color transition is smooth, and the overall surface retains the tactile smoothness typical of German craftsmanship from this period. The planter is in very good condition, showing only minimal traces of use and no chips or cracks. The form of this planter echoes the voice of 1970s design, when German manufacturers explored texture and color, seeking new ways to bring nature into everyday objects. The thick, lava-like glaze speaks of a fascination with elemental forces and organic shapes, while the brown base references the earth – the foundation of any interior. The textured glaze, reminiscent of foamed tree bark or the traces of an eruption, turns this modest piece into a vivid story about materiality and craft. This planter can be displayed on a low, light-wood sideboard, where its contrasting colors will catch natural light. It would work well grouped with other ceramics from the same era or paired with simple, monochromatic vases – especially in mid-century modern or eclectic interiors, or against white walls. Pairing it with plants featuring deep green leaves can further accentuate the brown and beige hues and highlight the organic character of the piece.
