ABOUT PRODUCTID 20347
This faience plate from 1957, designed by Elżbieta Piwek-Białoborska for the Włocławek Faience Factory, is a distinctive example of the Polish 'New Look' modernism of the late 1950s. Crafted in glazed faience with a cool, muted greyish-blue semi-gloss finish, the plate features an irregular, organic round shape and a pronounced asymmetrical hole near the rim. The surface is adorned with hand-painted abstract motifs—large black oval forms outlined with free, expressive lines, each containing cream-yellow and white teardrop- or seed-like elements. The composition is dynamic, with overlapping lines and a sense of movement, reflecting the individual character of each piece. At 19 cm in diameter and 4 cm in height, the plate displays subtle marks of manual forming—a slightly uneven rim and unique variations in the painted decoration. The condition is very good; the surface is smooth and glossy, with no chips, restorations, or visible signs of wear.In its form, this plate embodies the spirit of Polish modernism, which in the mid-20th century boldly fused utility with artistic innovation. The irregular contour and rim aperture speak of a search for expressive freedom, while the hand-painted decoration reveals the creator's gesture—each line a trace of the era’s optimism and its openness to international modernist currents. The plate seems to narrate a story of postwar artistic experimentation, where applied art was both a field of design dialogue and a continuation of Polish ceramic traditions.Such a piece can be displayed on an open shelf or mounted as a ceramic artwork, allowing its asymmetrical form and dynamic pattern to be fully appreciated. It pairs well with other mid-century modern objects—organically shaped glassware, minimalist
