The 'Cello' plate is a mid-20th-century example of Polish porcelain, produced by the Wawel Porcelain Factory in Wałbrzych during the 1950s. Circular in form (32 cm in diameter, 4 cm in height) with a gently raised rim, the plate's entire surface is covered in a dynamic black-and-white cubist graphic. Inspired by Otto Gutfreund's work, the design references the shape of a cello and musical motifs, firmly rooted in mid-century modern aesthetics with strong cubist influences. The surface is smooth, glazed, and highly lustrous, while the precision of craftsmanship is evident in the crispness of the lines and clarity of composition. The reverse bears the signature: 'Wawel, made in Poland.' The plate is preserved in very good condition, showing no visible signs of wear or damage. This porcelain object carries the spirit of Polish postwar avant-garde: the geometric graphic seems to narrate the era's fascination with modernity, where music and form intersect in an abstract, kinetic rhythm. The interplay of black and white—like a musical score—suggests a dialogue between light and shadow, while the cubist divisions evoke a sense of energy captured within an everyday object. It is a piece that serves both a utilitarian and an artistic role, acting as a visual commentary on a period of bold formal experimentation. The plate could serve as a centerpiece on a dining table or as a standalone accent on a living room sideboard—ideally paired with matte wood or glass surfaces to highlight the porcelain's sheen and the graphic strength of the decor. It would fit well in mid-century modern collector's interiors, as well as in eclectic arrangements where it might contrast with soft textiles or minimalist sculptures. It may be combined with other black-and-white porcelain wares to create a subtle, graphic rhythm across the table.
