This antique pocket watch chain (Albert chain), crafted in Austria around 1880, exemplifies the refined historicism of the late 19th century. The construction features a robust chain of gold-plated brass (gold double technique) in a warm, yellow-gold hue with a subtle rosy undertone and medium gloss. The chain links vary in size, imparting visual dynamism and solidity, and are finished with matching clasps: a large round spring clasp and a smaller hook. The decorative fob is circular, adorned with ornate scrollwork in gold-plated brass. One side features a glossy black Bakelite insert with an intaglio relief of the mythological Chronos in silvery-gray, while the reverse (crafted from mother-of-pearl) displays a raised glyptic depiction of Chaos. The piece is preserved in very good condition, with minimal signs of wear, no visible damage, and all elements authentic to the period. The forms and materials of the chain evoke an era when time was considered both a practical and a philosophical concept. The gold-plated links speak to the elegance of social gatherings and the gravity of daily rituals, while the fob—depicting Chronos and Chaos—introduces a symbolic dialogue between order and primordial energy.
