ABOUT PRODUCTID 15615
This object is a hand-coloured copperplate engraving created in 1775 by Johan Sebastian Leitner as a zoological illustration for Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber’s renowned work. The scene captures a monkey in a dynamic, lifelike stance on a mossy, brown-green rock, against a muted blue-grey mountainous backdrop. The animal’s fur is rendered in warm, rusty-brown, accented with white on its underbelly, chest, hands, and around its face. To the right, a close-up sketch of the head emphasizes anatomical detail. The plate exhibits matte, watercolor-like coloring typical of 18th-century naturalist engravings, with balanced, earthy tones and softly contoured black outlines. The artwork was framed in the early 20th century in Stuttgart, presented in a narrow metallic frame with a gold or champagne hue, complemented by an understated cream passe-partout showing minor age-related yellowing. Below the image, a serifed scientific caption affirms the academic context of the print. The engraving is in excellent condition for its age; the passe-partout displays some subtle, expected discolouration, but no major damages or repairs are evident.
This engraving embodies the spirit of the late 18th century—a time when scientific illustration balanced accuracy with artistic sensibility. Its form and temperament speak to an era of discovery: every brushstroke echoes both methodical
