ABOUT PRODUCTID 42323
This antique American Sarough carpet, measuring an imposing 267 x 350 cm, originates from the Saruk/Arak region of Iran, woven during the golden era of Persian weaving in the 1920s and 1930s. Crafted entirely by hand, it features selected, dense wool on a cotton foundation. The distinctive palette centers around a deep, matte terracotta-red background, interwoven with tones of navy blue, gold ochre, olive green, powder pink, and ivory. The design abandons the central medallion in favor of masterfully balanced floral bouquets and stylized vases, all framed by a wide, multi-layered border enriched with intricate ornamentation. Every hand-tied knot reveals the skill of past masters, and the soft, velvety pile has retained its density and flexibility over the decades. The rug is preserved in very good condition—colors remain vibrant, edges and fringes are intact, and the surface shows no signs of wear or repair. This rug tells a story of East meeting West during the interwar period: a Persian masterpiece created for American importers, carrying the soul of the Orient while catering to the tastes of the New York elite. Its design—eschewing the central medallion for bouquets and stylized vases—echoes a dialogue between Persian tradition and the Art Deco style that was captivating the world at the time. Each knot and hue, derived from natural dyes, speaks of decades past
