ABOUT PRODUCTID 42249
This Chinese Art Deco rug from the 1920s is a hand-knotted antique originating from the Tiencin region. Crafted from lustrous, high-quality wool on a cotton foundation using the asymmetrical Persian Senneh knot, it features a dense, plush pile with a smooth, velvety texture. The design centers on a spacious, deep indigo field, framed by a sapphire-turquoise border. Decorative motifs—sparse vases and blooming branches in the corners—are rendered in soft shades of gold, beige, powder pink, and green, giving the rug its characteristic Art Deco restraint. The century-old dyes and the wool's natural sheen impart a dynamic play of color, shifting from silvery-sapphire highlights to matte, almost black-navy depths depending on the angle of the light. Dimensions: 160 x 236 cm. Condition: the rug exhibits pile wear with exposed foundation and warp in some areas, as well as visible old repairs on the border. Within this rug lies the spirit of the interwar Golden Age, when Chinese craftsmanship merged with the daring, geometric aesthetic of Western Art Deco. The minimalist field and solitary floral elements evoke the modernist interiors of New York and Paris, where such rugs became a symbol of luxury and cosmopolitan taste. As light moves across the pile, the surface shimmers or deepens into shadow—telling a silent story of a bygone century in subtle contrasts and the gentle patina of time. This rug may serve as the focal point in a living room styled with curatorial eclecticism or modernist simplicity
