The Samarkand Mauri rug is a large, handwoven example of mid-20th-century Afghan craftsmanship, measuring 278 x 415 cm including fringes. Made from carefully selected sheep’s wool, it features a traditional structure with a dense Persian knot and robust hand-finished fringes at the shorter edges. The dominant color is a deep, saturated teal-turquoise, subtly shifting between cyan and dark emerald green depending on the light and pile direction. The central field is adorned with a rhythmic grid of octagonal göl medallions, accented in ivory, black, and warm ochre. The main border is rendered in burgundy, brick red, and deep brown, enhanced by geometric diamond and chevron motifs. The rug’s surface has a velvety, semi-gloss sheen with a gentle patina, while the nuanced tonal transitions in the dyes attest to the piece’s age and authenticity. The overall condition is very good, showing only noble signs of time on the fringes, with no damage or repairs. This textile echoes the legacy of Silk Road caravans and the migrations of the Tekke–Ersari tribes, who passed down dyeing and weaving secrets through generations in northern Afghanistan.
