This salon set, attributed to Hans Makart and crafted in Austria in the first half of the 19th century, comprises a sofa, four chairs, a table, an imposing mirror, and an umbrella stand. Constructed from wood and finished in a deep, high-gloss French polish, the ensemble exudes a mirror-like black sheen. Rich mother-of-pearl inlays and gilded accents adorn the furniture, most notably on the table top, mirror frame, and umbrella stand base. The upholstery is a high-quality fabric in a saturated sapphire blue with intricate floral and medallion patterns in white and silver, providing a striking contrast to the dark wood. The set is rooted in the historicist style, drawing on both Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque influences, evident in the ornate crestings, openwork and carved backs, and finely turned legs. The proportions are balanced, and the composition of the set is coherent. Condition: professionally restored, excellent, with no signs of damage or wear; authenticity of materials and decorative techniques preserved. This set speaks in the voice of Viennese historicism of the mid-19th century: refinement and theatricality, echoing Makart's opulent interiors for the social elite. The monumental mirror and openwork backs evoke palace salons where the flicker of chandeliers played across mother-of-pearl surfaces. The deep black wood contrasts with the vivid upholstery, offering a mood of grandeur balanced by order; every element recounts an era when furniture was not merely functional but a statement of status and taste. The ensemble would find its place in period
