ABOUT PRODUCTID 5263
This Biedermeier salt cellar from Lower Silesia, dating to circa 1830–1860, is crafted from layered, cut glass with remarkable precision. Its form evokes a miniature tub: a compact body measuring 7.6 cm in diameter and 6 cm in height is complemented by two prominent, rectangular handles, lending the piece an architectural presence. The dominant cobalt blue, deeply saturated, contrasts with panels of clear glass to emphasize geometric divisions—vertical rectangular segments and a horizontal band circling the rim. The base and sides are adorned with cut starburst and arch motifs, while the glossy finish enhances the interplay of light and reflection. Every detail attests to the high standard of 19th-century Central European glassmaking. The piece is preserved in very good condition, exhibiting minor abrasions typical of its age and no visible damage. Within this small form, the spirit of Biedermeier domesticity is palpable: clarity and functional elegance are subtly enriched with restrained decoration. The salt cellar tells the story of an era when even the most utilitarian objects were designed with care for detail and proportion. Through the prism of cobalt glass, one can almost hear the quiet bustle of a 19th-century table, where each object held meaning and the play of light on cut glass offered a discreet gesture of refinement. It may be displayed on a walnut or mahogany sideboard, accompanied by a silver tray or porcelain miniatures to highlight its historical pedigree. The salt cellar will complement a classically arranged living room or a collector’s study, serving as either a period accent among other Biedermeier pieces or a gentle counterpoint to the clean lines of modernist forms. Pairing it with clear glassware or ceramics in muted tones will bring out the depth of the cobalt blue and the subtlety of its cut patterns.
