ABOUT PRODUCTID 36210
This candle holder by Czesław Palczewski, created in Poland circa 1960–1975, is a sculptural example of post-war metalwork, embodying the spirit of brutalism and modernism. Crafted from galvanized, patinated steel, the piece stands on a stable, cylindrical base 10 cm in diameter. Its central sculptural element—a vertical axis adorned with symmetrical rows of circular cutouts—is topped with a shallow dish candle holder featuring a central spike, finished in a warm, patinated metal tone. The surface presents deep, matte blacks and browns with a subtle satin sheen, accented by visible marks of hand-hammering. All joints and welds remain exposed, emphasizing the honesty of the material and the unique, artisanal character of the object. Measuring 36 cm in height, this candle holder displays the hallmarks of Polish mid-century modern, minimalism, and brutalism. It is preserved in very good condition, with an even, noble patina and no visible corrosion or damage. The shape of this piece speaks in the language of Polish modernism: a steel form, stripped of unnecessary ornamentation, creates a monumental yet airy accent. The patinated, hand-forged metal conjures the image of a 1960s artist’s studio—a time when raw material became a medium for experimentation and a testament to authenticity. The rhythmic pattern of cutouts and the architectural silhouette evoke a narrative of postwar courage, where steel was embraced as a pliant, expressive substance. The surface patina does not conceal its age
