ABOUT PRODUCTID 36096
This miniature sepet-type chest, created in early 20th-century Japan for the European market, is a striking example of Japonism-era craftsmanship. The 41 cm high body is crafted from lacquered wood in a deep burgundy shade, serving as a backdrop for meticulously painted landscapes: a volcano, sailboats, birds over water, and lush vegetation. The front doors and inner drawers are adorned with motifs executed in the technique of abraded metallic foils, producing a luminous, dimensional effect. Metal fittings and subtle drawer decorations complete this refined piece, while the multi-drawer and door configuration makes it both decorative and functional for storing small items. Its proportions are monumental for its category, and the high quality of decoration is evident even inside the compartments. The piece is preserved in very good condition; minor traces of time in the painted surface confirm its authenticity and over a century of history. This chest tells the story of an era when Europe was captivated by Far Eastern aesthetics, and Japanese craftsmanship became synonymous with sophisticated taste.
