ABOUT PRODUCTID 42807
This ceramic cake or serving plate by Villeroy & Boch, produced at the Dresden branch between 1874 and 1909, embodies the early modernist aesthetic and accomplished craftsmanship of its era. The low, wide form (33 cm diameter) features two integrated, gently curved handles for practical serving. Its smooth, matte surface is defined by the Spritzdekor airbrush technique: a warm gradient of yellow fading to creamy white, punctuated by geometric, airbrushed accents in shades of brown and grey. The central motif—a stylized oriental bird perched on a bamboo branch, executed in bold black and ochre lines—anchors the plate firmly in the modernist idiom of the early twentieth century. The piece is in good condition: the ceramic is free of cracks, chips, or repairs, with only subtle underglaze discolorations typical for its age. This plate tells the story of a transitional moment in design history: it draws on the geometric discipline of modernism while carrying an exotic ornament, echoing the fascination with the Orient characteristic of early Art Deco. The bird among bamboo branches evokes a journey of the imagination beyond Europe, while the soft color transitions and abstract background recall the spirit of avant-garde studios, where tradition met innovation. Every detail serves the idea of harmony—this plate stands as a quiet remnant of past decades, ready to accompany new rituals of serving and gathering. It can be displayed on an oak sideboard
