ABOUT PRODUCTID 6243
This set of four cups with matching saucers, designed by Wincenty Potacki in 1962 for the Ćmielów Porcelain Factory, represents the spirit of Polish mid-century modern design. Each cup is crafted from fine porcelain in a warm, creamy white, with a deep brown band encircling the lower part. The primary decorative motif features stylized playing card suits—hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs—arranged in a rhythmic, modernist pattern in vivid red and black. The rims, slender handles, and interiors of the cups are gilded by hand, introducing a subtle sheen and a striking contrast to the porcelain’s white surface. The saucers echo the same color accents and are finished with gold edging. The surface of the porcelain is smooth and high-gloss, while the proportions (cup: 8 x 7.5 cm; saucer diameter: 14.5 cm) remain light and balanced, typical of the era’s design. The set is preserved in very good vintage condition, with only minor rubbing on the saucers’ gilding—no visible cracks or chips. The form of these cups speaks to the optimism and playful spirit of Polish modernism in the 1960s—a time when daily rituals became a canvas for experiments with color, symbolism, and geometry. The card suit motifs, applied with a wink, suggest the lightness of a game and convivial gathering, while the gilded interiors subtly reflect light, recalling the everyday celebration of simple moments.
