This set of five French chairs from the 1940s features a precise, geometric silhouette typical of late Art Deco. The frames are crafted from solid oak with a matte finish in a warm, medium-brown shade, accentuating the natural wood grain. The legs are straight and substantial with gently rounded edges, and traditional mortise and tenon joints are visible throughout the robust construction. Both seat and backrest are upholstered in deep raspberry velvet, which remains in its original, very good condition. A decorative row of brass or bronze upholstery nails traces the edges of the tapering backrest, which narrows elegantly towards the top. The spring-based seat structure and sturdy oak frame ensure comfortable support and stability. Overall condition is very good—original upholstery is intact, with only minimal signs of use. These chairs speak of the restrained elegance of postwar France—a period when simplicity of form and the integrity of materials reflected a renewed vision of domestic life. The slender, tapering backs suggest aspirations toward lightness and harmony, while the deep raspberry velvet evokes gatherings and intimate conversation.
