ABOUT PRODUCTID 16006
This pair of vintage elephant figures from the 1960s was crafted from papier-mâché and finished in genuine leather with a cool-toned, deep black surface and a subtle semi-matte sheen. The hand-applied leather wraps tightly around their sculpted forms, drawing out the musculature and anatomical details through subtle undulations and folds—raised trunks, divided legs, and the natural texture of the material are all distinctly visible. Each elephant features realistic and compact proportions, with trunks elevated in a gesture evocative of movement and optimism. Their tusks, made from a smooth, creamy material, stand in sharp contrast to the dark leather bodies. The separately crafted matte-black leather ears add authentic dimensionality. The use of natural leather and papier-mâché, alongside meticulous handcraft, firmly places these objects within the folk art and rustic decorative traditions of the mid-20th century. The set remains in excellent condition, exhibiting only minimal signs of age consistent with genuine vintage objects. Produced using an approach that reveals both artisanal mastery and a keen observation of nature, these elephants tell a quiet story of the 1960s. Their tactile surfaces bear the imprint of the maker’s hand, while the form itself recalls a playful, almost childlike vision of the animal world—a dialogue between rural craft tradition and the emerging modernist tendency toward simplification and natural detail.
